Where

The following locations have let us know they are hosting an event for 2005. Please drop us a note if you know of an additional location, or if you are interested in hosting an event. Several additional events and locations will be forthcoming.

All events are on Sunday, November 20th, unless otherwise indicated.

  • Adelaide, Australia
    A day’s worth of events will be held, including a ceremony devised especially for the Feast Festival to celebrate and mourn those transfolk who have lost their lives. All events will be held at Feast at Fowler’s Live, Lion Arts Centre, Corner North Terrace and Morphett Street. Disability Access. For additional details, see http://www.feast.org.au/

  • Melbourne, Australia
    Metropolitan Community Church of Melbourne, Australia will hold a service of rememberance honouring our TG brothers and sisters at 7:00 p.m. at 217 Burnley Street, Burnley. Our service will include a candle lighting ceremony within a service. Our guest speaker is a young FTM man who is a member of our youth group and the congregation have journeyed with him both spiritualy and through transition for a number of years.

  • Calgary, Alberta, Canada
    Calgary’s First Transgender Day of Remebrance will be held on Monday, November
    21, 2005 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Hosted by Positive Space at Mount Royal College In the Meditation room at Mount Royal Lincoln Park campus.

  • Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
    TTIQ Alliance and Lambda Christian Community Church will host the following on Sunday, November 20, 2005 at Garneau United Church 11148 – 84 Avenue:
    – 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Information Fair: Trans men and women will be on site to share information and resources, answer questions, book speaking engagements and talk about services that are available in the Greater Edmonton region. Alberta’s Transgender Warrior Display will be included.
    – 3:45 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Film: Soldiers Girl, The true story of a young soldier
    beaten to death for falling in love with a transgendered nightclub performer.
    – 7:00 p.m. Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance Memorial Service with the Remembering our Dead Memorial Quilt & Display.

  • Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
    March starts at 3:30pm sharp in front of the Carnegie Centre, 401 Main St. They will be marching to SFU Harbour Centre 515 W. Hastings St., Terasen Room #1800. Speakers include Libby Davies and Bill Siksay, MPs (members of parliament). There will also be a screening of the documentary In the Flesh. Tami Starlight, Canadian national trans activist/advocate, will hold a reading of our fallen trans community members. There will also be a memorial Open microphone for community members to speak, and Much more. Sponsored by SFU — Out On Campus, Egale Canada, Trans Action Canada, and Xtra West.

  • Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (U Winnipeg)
    The University of Winnipeg will be hosting a candlelight vigil in the quad on Monday, November 21st from 12:45 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.. The vigil will include several speakers and a reading of the names of individuals killed in 2005. Don’t forget to dress warmly, as this is an outdoor vigil. Should the weather be too blustery we will be in the Bulman MPR.

  • Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
    An event will be held at the Metropolitan Community Church, 2786 Agricola St., Bloomfield Centre, suite # 108 at 7:00 p.m. on the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

  • Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
    Several events will be taking place in Ottawa. These include:

    Tuesday, November 15, 2005: A Film Night: NFB Doc: In the Flesh
    At Pink Triangle Services, 177 Nepean St., 5th Floor at 7:00 p.m.
    The film will be the National Film Board Documentary, In the Flesh, about two Male to Female and two Female to Male transsexual people, including the Montreal and Toronto activist and film-maker, Mirha-Ross Soleil. An open discussion will follow facilitated by Jessica Freedman.

    Thursday, November 17, 2005: A Panel Discussion on Transsexuality & Transgenderism at Sandy Hill C.C. 250 Somerset St. East at 7:00 p.m.
    The Panel for the Discussion will be Helma Seidl, MSW, RSW, CCC, RN, Dr. Norman Barwin, Bill Siksay, M.P., Jessica Freedman and Alex Adams. The panel will be chaired by Jessica Freedman.

    Friday, November 18, 2005: A Divergence Dance at Shanghai Restaurant, 651 Somerset Street West at 10:30 p.m. 19+ $5 cover.

    Sunday, November, 20, 2005: Transgender Day of Remembrance Observance at Jack Purcell C. C., Elgin St. at 2 pm. Ceremony at 3:00 p.m.

  • St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada (Brock University)
    A Transgender Day Of Remembrance event will be held from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Brock University, Pond inlet, on Monday November 21st. The event will include Hershel T. Russell’s slide presentation “The Joy of Gender” and interviews of local Trans Youth. A candle light vigil will follow the presentation. Politicians, media, unions, GLBTQ allies and the general public have been invited to the event. This event is funded by the Unitarian Congregation of Niagara, PFLAG St. Catharines, The Imperial Sovereign Court of St. Catharines and the Greater Niagara Region, The New Vouz, and Has been organized by PFLAG St. Catharines, OPIRG-Brock, Niagara Pride, OUTNiagara, Aids Niagara, CAW Local 199 LGBT Committee, Brock Pride and Transgendered of Niagara.

  • Guelph, Ontario, Canada
    The community of Guelph, Ontario will be holding a small ceremony on November 20th at Out On The Shelf, 147 Wyndham Street North. The space will be open from 12:30 p.m., the actual event will be taken place between 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. There will be speakers from Transaccess (a trans education group in Toronto) and a number of speakers from Guelph.

  • Toronto, Ontario, Canada
    Their ceremony will be held at 519 Church Street Community Centre on Saturday, November 19th, from 5:00 til 7:00 p.m.

  • Toronto, Ontario, Canada (U Toronto)
    The University of Toronto Women’s Centre, 563 Spadina Ave, Room 100 (just north of College on the east side) will be hosting an event on Monday, November 21st, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. There will be tea/coffee and biscuits, art supplies for anyone inspired, a reading of names, and individual stories of transgender violence resulting in death will be available to read or share aloud in memoriam. If anyone has art, such as spoken word, poetry, visual media, songs, ectera that relates to queer-gender violence or memorial, they would love if you could perform or loan it for this event.

  • London, England
    They will be holding an event at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, London. It¹s a five-minute walk from Bethnal Green tube station: see http://www.oxfordhouse.org.uk/access/index.html for directions and a link to a map. The chapel is on the third floor. There is disabled access via a lift but please let us know in advance so we can arrange for a steward to escort you. Jennifer Maidman and Jessica Lauren will be playing music and there will be a number of readings. We will pay special honour to the people who have died in the last year due to trans-phobic violence. There will also be time for quiet reflection. We are still looking for people who¹d like to do a reading — either your own words or we can provide some texts. We are also looking for stewards for the day to help people find their way to the chapel. Please bring family and friends. The chapel is a fairly intimate space and it would be good to have an idea of numbers so please drop me a line if you think you¹ll be there.   • Wellington, New Zealand
    Agender New Zealand in association with TransMana will be hosting an event in the nation’s capital city. To be hosted on the Transgender Day of Remembrance at 2:00 p.m. in Civic Square behind the Main Library. This will be the 2nd annual event in New Zealand. All transgendered people and our supporters are welcome to attend. An open mic will be available to all.

  • Quezon City, Philippines
    On November 19, the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines (STRAP), in
    cooperation with the Order of St. Aelred, will be hosting the first Transgender
    Day of Remembrance in the Philippines at the Friendship Hall of The Order of St.
    Aelred at 5 PM. The theme of the Manila Event is “A Day of Remembrance, The
    Start of Acceptance”. An ecumenical mass of remembrance and candle lighting will be held in honor of those who died since the last Transgender Day of Remembrance in 2004. Refreshments shall be served for the guests. Additional details are available at http://www.m2fstrap.org/.

  • Edinburgh, Scotland
    An act of remembrance on Saturday, November 19, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., open to all, will be lead by the Metropolitan Community Church, Edinburgh, followed by refreshments and the opportunity to socialise. MCC Edinburgh will be jointly hosting the event with the LGBT Centre for Healthy Living in Edinburgh, Transmen Scotland, and LGBT Youth Scotland.

    The Noodles, an Amsterdam (NL) based queer and/or transgender group, will hold a memorial at their monthly cafe at Saarein II, Elandsstraat 119. Open from 5:00 p.m., At 6:00 p.m. there will be a walk from Saarein to the Leidseplein. There they will hold a vigil. Afterwards, they will walk back to Saarein.

    In an effort to educate people about the transgender community, UC Davis’ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center will be hosting a series of events called Trans Action Week starting on November 15th. The series of events will educate people on topics such as transgender legal issues, gender policing in public restrooms and general problems within the transgender community. Trans Action Week is an expansion of the Transgender Day of Remembrance Memorial, which was held last year to pay respect to transgender people who have died as a result of violent crimes. This year the same memorial will serve to conclude the series on Friday at 7 p.m. in MU II. There will also be a showing of Georgie Girl, a transgender safe zone training, and an LGBTQI self defense program. Please contact the LGBTRC for more details.

    An event will be held on Monday, November 21 at UCLA. Information, resources, buttons will be passed out from 11:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the central part of campus (Bruin Walk). The walk will be lined with poster-sized flyers about the Day of Remembrance and those who have been killed. At 6:00 p.m., they will meet in the dorms (De Neve Plaza) and have a candlelight vigil, speak out, and march to the LGBT Campus Resource Center.

They will have a panel of transgender/gender queer persons speaking about their experiences, from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., followed by a vigil at 5:00 p.m.

  • Riverside, California, U.S.A. (UC Riverside)
    Description: The LGBTRC honors the 7th Annual National Transgender Day of Remembrance with a display memorial to commemorate each of the 354 known victims of transgender related violence. This memorial will be hanging along the walkway outside Tomas Rivera Library from November 14 to November 18. The LGBTRC (250 Costo Hall) will have more information available about transgender identities. We invite everyone to come check out this powerful display against hatred and violence.

    San Diego’s fourth Transgender Day of Remembrance will be held at the San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center. Participants are invited to gather at The Center for a march at 5:00 p.m. followed by a ceremony at 6:00 p.m. The keynote speaker will be M.E. Stephens, a prominent local attorney and activist, as well as a member of The Center’s Board of Directors. This event is sponsored by the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, AEGIS, Bienestar, Center for Community Solutions, The Center/Hillcrest Youth Center, Ebony Pride San Diego, Equality California, the Imperial Court de San Diego, Institute for Transgender Education, Mama’s Kitchen, Project S.T.A.R., San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition, Transgender Community Coalition and the Transgender Law Center.

    The Syracuse University Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center will hold a remembrance ceremony in Hendricks Chapel on Tuesday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. to honor those who have been killed. Officiated by the Reverend Kelly Sprinkle, Interdenominational Protestant Campus Minister, the hour-long program will include shared poetry, personal reflections, and a reading of the names of the deceased. The event will conclude with a candlelight procession across the Quad leading to the Schine Student Center, where the blown-out candles will create a memorial representing each transgender person’s extinguished life. The program is co-sponsored by student organizations Outrage, Pride Union, Open Doors, Black Communications Society, Students Advancing Sexual Safety and Empowerment (SASSE), the Syracuse University R.A.P.E. Center, Substance Abuse Prevention and Health Enhancement (S.A.P.H.E.) Office, and the Slutzker Center for International Services.

    Other Syracuse University Transgender Remembrance-related events include a poster-making session on Thursday, November 10, from noon 5:00 p.m. in the Schine Student Center, Room 228A. The program, sponsored by Outrage, a Syracuse University LGBT student organization, will honor the 25 reported deaths of transgender people since 2004’s Transgender Day of Remembrance. Participants are encouraged to artistically remember one transgender person’s life and legacy. These posters will hang in the Schine Student Center Atrium with the candle display the week of November 14 – 18.

    The LGBT Resource Center will provide information and resources about transgender issues on Wednesday, November 16 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the Schine Student Center Atrium. That evening at 8:00 p.m., Pride Union and Open Doors, two Syracuse University LGBT student organizations, will show Beautiful Boxer in Hall of Languages, Room 107. The film chronicles the true story of Thailand’s famed transgender kickboxer, Parinya Charoenphol, who fought in brutal Thai kickboxing to support herself and later afford sex-reassignment surgery.

    For the third year, Central Washington University will be holding an event to commemorate the Transgender Day of Remembrance. The will be holding a mock candlelight vigil (because they can’t have lit candles), reading the first-person biographies of the last year’s victims, and paying tribute with several student speakers. They will also be examining the triumphs of the trans community in the last few years, and the progression — albeit slow — of the United States as it relates to gender variant issues, transgender legal rights, representation, and other issues. The event is expected to be around two hours long, and will be held in the Student Union Building, in the Cesar Chavez Theatre.     A Transgender Day of Remembrance event will be held on Monday, November 21st at 7:00 p.m. in Cartwright Center. Hosted by PRIDE Center/Rainbow Unity

    This years event, will be at 5:00 p.m. at the Memorial Union, on the University of Wisconsin Campus. There will be reading the names by the youth group: Proud Theater and lighting candles, along with Rev. Curt Anderso saying a prayer for those lives that have been lost, on the entrance steps. Proud Theater will perform 2 short plays, read a poem, and sing a song. Local folk singer Tracy Jane Comer will perform a few songs at the end. Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, Dane County Supervisor Kyle Richmond, City Councilman Micheal Verveer, local gender therapist Sue Gill, Police Detective Alix Olsen, statewide Transgender Activists Laura Gutknecht and Ann Marie Knittel are scheduled to speak. Sponsors of this event are Wisconsin Group Working for Equality and their Director Ann Marie Knittel, the LGBT Center and their Director Erick Trekell of the University of Wisconsin, Outreach LGBT Center, and Madison Area Transgender Association.

    A candlelight vigil will be held on the lakefront at 5:00 p.m. on the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Meet at the bottom of the Brady Street Bridge, near Veterans Park-Lincoln Memorial Drive. This event is being sponsored by the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Resource Center at UW-Milwaukee.
